A New Chapter: Designing a Home That Feels Like Theirs
After a decade of moving between small European apartments, Brinya and her family were finally ready to put down roots in their first U.S. home. But with a limited budget and a mix of borrowed and inherited furniture, they faced a challenge—how to make the space feel truly theirs without rushing big purchases or expensive renovations.
That’s where I came in. My goal? To create a vision that gave them clarity and confidence as they slowly transformed their living space—something warm, inviting, and functional, all while embracing the home’s existing elements like carpet and honey oak trim.
Bringing Their Vision to Life
🔹 A Thoughtful Foundation – Since the family planned to invest in sofas later, I curated a layout that allowed flexibility while prioritizing comfort and flow.
🔹 Blending Old & New – To make the inherited pieces feel intentional, I layered in textiles, natural textures, and a warm neutral palette that tied everything together.
🔹 Clever Contrast – Black accent furniture and arched bookcases introduced depth and structure, adding a modern touch without overwhelming the space.
🔹 Budget-Friendly Updates – A painted mantle and brick fireplace would instantly refresh the room, creating a cozy focal point while keeping costs low.
🔹 Future-Proofing the Space – With planned kitchen renovations on the horizon, I ensured that the living room design would evolve seamlessly, no matter what changes came next.
Brinya loved IKEA’s belief that anyone should be able to afford a beautiful space, and I couldn’t agree more. With the right vision, thoughtful design choices, and a little patience, this house will become more than just a home—it will be a reflection of their journey, one intentional step at a time.
